CalderGold Health & Fitness Centre
The CalderGold Health & Fitness Centre is our vision for a welcoming, supportive and community-owned centre created specifically for people over 40 in Calderdale.
It will bring fitness, rehabilitation, professional health support, nutrition, relaxation and social connection together under one roof. Instead of expecting people to fit into a conventional gym, CalderGold will be designed around the changing needs of adults as they move through their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.
Whether someone is already active, returning to exercise after illness or injury, managing a long-term health condition or taking their first steps towards better health, CalderGold will provide a place where they can progress safely, confidently and at their own pace.

Why CalderGold is needed
Many people become more aware of their health after the age of 40. Strength, mobility, balance, energy levels, body composition and recovery can begin to change. Menopause, joint pain, arthritis, injuries, long-term health conditions and reduced confidence can also make traditional exercise environments feel unsuitable or intimidating.
CalderGold will offer a different experience—one based on health, independence, confidence and long-term wellbeing. There will be no expectation that somebody must already be fit before joining. The purpose of the centre will be to meet people where they are and help them move forward.

An over-40-friendly gym
At the heart of the centre will be a fully equipped gym designed for adults over 40. The equipment and training environment will support strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, mobility, flexibility and everyday functional movement.
Members will be able to exercise independently or receive guidance from qualified professionals. The gym will support people who want to build muscle and bone strength, improve stamina, manage their weight, recover from inactivity, prepare for a personal challenge or remain active and independent for longer.

Personal training and tailored support
CalderGold will provide access to personal training and small-group coaching for people who would benefit from additional guidance. Training can be adapted around an individual’s current fitness, mobility, confidence, goals and relevant health considerations.
Support may include fitness assessments, personalised exercise programmes, strength and conditioning, weight-management support, mobility and balance work, return-to-exercise guidance, support around long-term conditions and regular progress reviews.

Classes for strength, movement and mobility
A dedicated studio will offer age-appropriate exercise and wellbeing sessions. Planned activities include strength classes, mobility sessions, yoga, Pilates, kettlebell training, carefully adapted circuits, gentle movement and relaxation sessions.
Beginner-friendly and lower-impact options will help people participate without feeling left behind. Classes will provide professional guidance while also creating opportunities for encouragement, friendship and shared motivation.

Physiotherapy, rehabilitation and professional support
CalderGold is intended to be more than a gym. The wider vision is to bring together trusted professionals who can help people manage their health, movement and recovery.
Planned services include physiotherapy, rehabilitation support and massage therapy. The centre may also work with specialists in nutrition, menopause wellbeing, injury recovery, mental wellbeing, arthritis, joint health and long-term condition management.
All services will remain within the professional scope of the person providing them and will not replace medical care from a GP or another qualified healthcare professional.

Nutrition and healthy eating
Food and nutrition will be an important part of the CalderGold approach. Members will be able to access practical guidance designed to support balanced eating, healthy ageing, weight management, muscle maintenance and recovery without relying on restrictive or unrealistic diets.
The centre is also planned to include a healthy café and community area where members can enjoy nutritious food and drinks in a relaxed environment. Over time, this space may also host healthy-eating workshops, cooking demonstrations and shared meals.

Health checks and ongoing progress
Where suitable professionals and facilities are available, CalderGold plans to offer health and wellbeing checks to help members understand their starting point and monitor their progress.
Progress will not be judged by body weight alone. Improvements in strength, mobility, balance, energy, confidence, consistency and everyday function can be equally important.

A supportive community
Social connection will be central to the CalderGold Centre. Loneliness and isolation can affect both physical and mental wellbeing, so CalderGold will create opportunities for people to meet others, take part in shared activities and feel that they belong.
The café and community spaces may be used for informal gatherings, tea and coffee mornings, wellbeing talks, workshops, community activities, volunteering, skills-sharing and supportive group programmes.
People will be welcome whether they are highly confident or nervous about attending for the first time. Kindness, respect and encouragement will be at the heart of the centre.

Accessible and welcoming
CalderGold aims to create an environment that is easier to use for people with different levels of fitness, confidence and mobility. The layout, equipment and changing facilities will be planned with accessibility in mind, including the needs of people who use walking aids or require additional support.
Subject to funding and practical feasibility, transport support such as a community minibus may also be explored for people who would otherwise struggle to reach the centre.

A community-owned co-operative
CalderGold Health & Fitness is being developed as a co-operative for community benefit. The people who use and support CalderGold can have a genuine voice in how it develops, contribute ideas, help shape priorities and participate in democratic decision-making.
Rather than operating purely to generate profit for outside shareholders, the co-operative model allows money to be reinvested into the centre, its services and the community it exists to support. Members will not simply be customers; they will be part of a community working together to create something valuable and lasting for Calderdale.

Designed with the community
CalderGold will continue to be shaped by the experiences, ideas and priorities of local people. Community surveys, conversations with prospective members and discussions with local professionals will help determine which facilities and services are most needed.
We welcome involvement from people over 40, people living with long-term health conditions, fitness and wellbeing professionals, community groups, charities, local organisations, potential co-operative members, volunteers, funding partners and supporters.

Our long-term vision
Our long-term vision is to create a centre where people over 40 can look after every aspect of their wellbeing in one supportive place—a place to exercise, recover, learn, eat well, meet people and receive trusted professional support.
CalderGold is not about trying to turn back the clock. It is about helping people make the years ahead as healthy, active and fulfilling as possible.

The centre is currently being developed
The CalderGold Health & Fitness Centre is a developing project and is not yet open. The final location, opening arrangements and complete range of services will depend on securing suitable premises, professional partnerships and the funding needed to bring the centre to life.
The information on this page describes our planned vision. Individual facilities and services will be confirmed as the project progresses.
